How to Write a 20-Page Research Paper: Detailed Instructions

As if writing a research paper wasn’t hard enough already, learning that you have to write one that is 20 pages long can send you to immediate shock followed closely by weeks of stress. The best approach is to take a moment to relax and take a breath. Plenty of students have successfully been able to complete such a project before you and we have just the detailed instructions you need to know to get write a stellar one yourself:

  1. Setting up a schedule
  2. The first step is to develop a long-term plan complete with a detailed list of tasks and deadlines for each one. You should develop a schedule as soon as you find out about your assignment.

  3. Brainstorming topics
  4. Develop a list of four or five topics that interest you then run them by your instructor to make sure they meet the assignment’s requirements. This is just a starting point, but it’s good to have options.

  5. Conducting pre-research
  6. Take your list of options and conduct some background online searches for available content. Take note of what discussions surround your topic options to narrow the focus of your study.

  7. Choosing your topic
  8. Choose a topic that seems to be the most manageable. It shouldn’t be too narrow that you can’t find enough resources, nor should it be too broad that you are unable to provide a full discussion.

  9. Conducting in-depth research
  10. After you’ve selected a topic you can search for resources at the library. Use only academic resources that have been printed within the last three years. Anything before this may be considered out of date.

  11. Organizing discussion points
  12. Take detailed notes and keep them organized. It may be a good idea to dedicate different sections of a notebook to the different discussion points you plan to make in your work.

  13. Drafting an outline and thesis
  14. Create an outline to guide the content of your 20-page assignment. It’s also a good idea to draft a thesis statement to give your first draft focus and direction.

  15. Writing the rough draft
  16. One of the most efficient techniques towards writing your rough draft is to do so quickly, in order to get all of your ideas down as they come up in your mind. Don’t slow yourself down by making corrections at this point.

  17. Revising your rough draft
  18. After completing your rough draft you should set your work aside for a few days so that you can revise it with a clear head. Look for every opportunity to improve the logic of your argument.

  19. Editing and proofreading
  20. Don’t forget to leave plenty of time to edit and proofread your work. This last step is crucial and can be all the difference between a mediocre grade and an excellent grade.
